SPLINTER-FREE PVD COATINGS

Decorative ring for steering wheel emblem

In the event of an airbag firing, the components are subjected to immense accelerations. Airbag caps and all attachments are safety-relevant components that are designed to protect the driver in the event of a crash and must not injure them. The worst-case scenario is flying components, splinters or particles. These would become dangerous projectiles.

These requirements also apply to the trim rings and emblems, which are firmly attached to the airbag caps. Despite these environmental conditions, design elements should meet the highest visual requirements and high quality standards.

Your task

  • No splintering of the metal layer when the airbag is fired
  • High quality and optical brilliance
  • Temperature range from -40°C to +105°C
  • Weldable, scratch-resistant, abrasion- and light-resistant

Our implementation

A completely splinter-free coating is a basic requirement for metallised emblems that are applied to airbags. A wafer-thin metal layer is applied to hard or soft thermoplastic materials using the PVD process. The metal layer is so flexible that it neither detaches nor splinters when the airbag is deployed and the component bursts.

In short, there is no risk of injury from flying particles or sharp-edged metal parts.

  • Chromium (VI)-free real metal PVD nanocoating that does not splinter when the airbag is fired
  • Special thermoplastic material
  • Moulded tear-open edge without sink marks in the visible area
  • Fully automatic application of the paint layers with a high-precision dosing system
  • Precise and reproducible process chain for medium and large series
  • Tests according to TL226 / DBL7384 / GS97xxx
  • No chromium (VI) anywhere in the coating process
  • Free from nickel
  • 100 % REACH-compliant, without special authorisation
